Barry Robson’s Barmy Army?
Chants in support of the Dons interim manager could be heard loud and clear from the Pittodrie stands on Saturday afternoon as Aberdeen demolished Hearts in the first half and blasted the race for third place again.
Rumors and insinuations had been circulating in Granite City last week that a managerial appointment was imminent and all eyes were on a mysterious new signing in the stands on Saturday who was looking to take charge of Aberdeen.
If Alan Burrows, Steven Gunn and Willie Garner have yet to make a decision, there’s no doubt that Saturday’s performance will have had more to do with the Dons hierarchy – is the answer right under their collective nose?
Robson, ably assisted by Steve Agnew, has guided his charges to four wins in his six games in charge, but it was the manner of the win over Hearts, coupled with the spirit shown at Tannadice on their previous outing, suggesting a cadre who bought into Robson’s methods. There is also an obvious improvement in fitness and energy across the board.
Aberdeen didn’t give Hearts a moment in the breathless first 45 minutes – another brace for Duk and Mattie Pollock’s first goal for the Dons was no more than the home side deserved as they choked the Jam Tarts’ midfield – Robert Snodgrass will do well his way out of Ylber Ramadani’s pocket before the Albanian leaves for an international assignment.
Robson has certainly got Aberdeen back to basics and there is a definite surge in confidence in the squad which makes this international break feel a bit premature.
It will be interesting to see if Aberdeen board make a decision to potentially reverse this dynamic when the season comes to an end by bringing in a new man, or stay with a man who grew up in an Aberdeenshire town is and was part of the company last Aberdeen team raising silverware?
