The Australian Sport Commission, in collaboration with sector stakeholders, is supporting the development of a strategy to transform the way participation is connected, conducted and supported in Australia.
A 17-strong Project Steering Group (PSG) was announced in March to support the development of the strategy with state and territory workshops to consult and co-design key stakeholders on early research, strategy drafts and content.
ASC Commissioner Craig Redman attended the Tasmanian workshop.
“It was really good to hear from Tasmanian sport firsthand some of the challenges they face in participating in the sport and even better to suggest some solutions for the future that will help shape the strategy,” he said.
“It’s really great to connect with passionate people who are interested in the opportunity to play sports.”
Para Quad Tasmania, which provides support and exercise programs for people with spinal cord injuries and physical disabilities, was among a number of organizations that attended the workshop.
Sport Development Coordinator Kevin Faulkner said it was great to attend the session and hear more ideas on how to increase participation and get people involved in sport.
Matt Fulton, PSG member and CEO of SportWest, who attended the WA session, said it was “incredibly exciting to see the initial functioning of the group being road tested, transformed and revived by the WA sports and leisure industry is further developed”.
“I am even more excited about the development of a nationwide, industry-focused strategy that will undoubtedly lay the groundwork for Australia to capitalize on the upcoming green and golden decade with a strong, vibrant and sustainable sports and leisure system,” added he added .
The remaining workshops will take place on Friday in Adelaide, May 29 in Sydney, June 1 in Brisbane, June 5 in Canberra and June 14 in Melbourne.
An online survey has also been launched to allow all Australians to give their views on the development of the strategy and ensure a wide range of views and experiences are captured.
The survey covers a number of areas, including the challenges participants face and behavioral trends at a grassroots level.
