Ford is recalling more than 450,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of an issue that could affect the battery, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement released Tuesday.
The recall affects certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles. The NHTSA said these vehicles' body and powertrain control modules may fail to detect a change in battery state of charge, which could result in the loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights or a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA notices state that dealers will recalibrate the body control module and powertrain control module at no charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be sent on May 13, 2024. For more information, owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. The callback number is 24S24.
Owners can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to nhtsa.gov for more information.
Ford recalls Broncos, Escapes due to fuel leak
Federal auto regulators also recently announced an investigation into a Ford recall of nearly 42,652 cars after a defect involving cracked fuel injectors that they said could lead to gas leaks and ignite engine fires.
In a summary report released last week, NHTSA wrote that it is opening an investigation into a recall affecting the 2022-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022 Escape vehicles.
According to the announcement of the federal investigation, owners can take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for free to have a drain hose installed in the vehicle.
The fix also includes a free update to the engine control software to detect a pressure drop in the fuel injection system, the federal regulator reported. In this case, the software deactivates the high-pressure fuel pump, reduces engine power and lowers the temperature in the engine compartment. Owners also receive a “Seek Service” message, the documents show.
Ford's number for this recall is 24S16. The recall is an extension of the previous recall: 22V-859. For more information, owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
