Dec 19, 2022 – The latest edition of Olympic Review, the official publication of the Olympic Movement, released in December 2022, delves deep into sport’s positive role in society and how the IOC and the Olympic Movement are working to ensure that the Sport contributes to the success of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the Olympism 365 strategy.
This strategy seeks to use the rallying power of the IOC and the Olympic Movement to bring together societal actors and create partnerships to ensure sport and its values can fulfill their rightful role as powerful tools for peace and positive social impact.
Olympic Review Volume 119 describes how this strategy ensures that sport can play a key role in sustainable development through a review of various multi-stakeholder projects around the world and third-party input from leading voices in the Olympic Movement and other partners .
Contributors to this edition include:
- Olympian Pau Gasol, a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, reflecting on the contribution of Olympism to society and how athletes can give back to their community
- Sergio Díaz-Granados, Executive President of CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, who highlights how sport plays a central role in his organization’s goal of promoting and strengthening gender equality, diversity and inclusion
- Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, who explains how sport is an important engine for gender equality
- Christian Deuringer, Head of Global Brand & Marketing at Worldwide Olympic Partner Allianz, who describes how his company is using its partnership with the IOC to build a better world through sport
- IOC Young Leader Tania Lee speaking about her Inclusive Leadership Programme, iLEAP, which aims to instill in athletes the values of Olympism and how they can use the skills they have learned in everyday life
- Natsiraishe Maritsa, winner of the IOC Women and Sport Award, explains how she uses taekwondo to empower girls in Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, projects detailed in the magazine include:
- Sportic, a Latin American initiative developed by the IOC and the Inter-American Development Bank that uses sport and technology to teach young people social and emotional skills that help them navigate society
- Olympafrica, a program that uses sport and the Olympic values to give young people across Africa the tools and opportunities to succeed
- Generation 2024, a Paris 2024 project that aims to encourage youth across France to make sport and physical activity a central part of their lives and leave a positive legacy.
