Olympic qualification for sport climbing in Oceania: New Zealand duo Tetzlaff and David win speed titles and receive quotas for Paris 2024

New Zealand speed climbers Julian David And Sarah Tetzlaff secured quota places for them Paris 2024 Olympic Games* by winning the men’s and women’s titles IFSC Sport Climbing Oceania Qualifier 2023 in Melbourne on Sunday (November 26), live on Olympic Channel.

18 year old David won Men’s speed Victory in dramatic fashion afterwards Hayden Barton from Australia, who had been fastest in the quarter and semi-finals, slipped halfway in the final.

Sensing victory, the New Zealander celebrated before reaching the timer, but quickly stopped when a chasing Barton appeared on his heels. David’s winning finish time was 6.77 seconds.

Tetzlaff (8.54 seconds) took the win and the only quota place on offer Women’s speed contest after Australians capitalized on a late mistake Gracefulness Crowley (8.88).

Crowley was in the lead until it appeared he misstepped on the final grab of the wall, allowing up-and-coming 2018 Youth Olympiad competitor Tetzlaff to overtake and secure the win.

The bouldering and lead titles and quota places were decided on Saturday, with Australia taking the men’s and women’s titles.

*As the National Olympic Committees have exclusive jurisdiction to represent their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation in the Paris Games is dependent on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
