The day’s early main game ended with Caleb Williams and No. 8 USC surviving a nail-biter in Colorado after dominating most of the contest. The defending Heisman Trophy champion threw for over 400 yards and six touchdowns, but had to sweat the win as the Trojans’ defense gave up 27 points in the second half.
But this game and all the others throughout the day were capped by the night’s action. In a wild shootout in Starkville, No. 20 Ole Miss edged No. 13 LSU 55-49 in a game that featured more than 1,300 yards of total offense. Then, later, No. 11 Notre Dame rallied to beat No. 17 Duke 21-14 in the final seconds of a thriller in Durham. The Irish pulled off a last-gasp victory just a week after a heartbreaking defeat.
Elsewhere Saturday, Kentucky’s Ray Davis celebrated his career day in the Wildcats’ surprise win over No. 22 Florida, rushing for 280 yards and three touchdowns. No. 3 Texas had no trouble dealing with Kansas despite a lucky bounce by the Jayhawks, and No. 1 Georgia survived a road panic at Auburn.
