NFC Championship: The 49ers’ Brock Purdy returns to the lineup with an injured elbow after Josh Johnson went down

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback carousel continues to spin during Sunday’s NFL championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Brock Purdy is back behind center after retiring in the first quarter with an injured elbow.

Purdy was forced back into action after QB Josh Johnson was removed after a sack in the third quarter with a concussion that was later described as a concussion. Purdy suffered his injury in the 49ers’ sixth offensive game. The play was initially ruled as an incomplete pass, but later turned into a fumble after the Eagles challenged.

According to the Fox show, running back Christian McCaffrey would be the emergency quarterback, but fullback Kyle Juszczyk was looking at the game sheet.

Purdy was hit with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and was nicknamed “Mr. Irrelevant”. Since replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy has gone unbeaten, including two playoff wins. Garoppolo replaced Trey Lance as quarterback when the first starter went down with a season-ending ankle injury.

For Johnson, this is the 36-year-old’s first playoff appearance. Johnson, a fifth-round pick in 2008, was the ultimate journeyman, bouncing through the league and appearing in games for seven different franchises. The 49ers Johnson was released from the Broncos practice team in December after Garoppolo fell.
