The Emory community is invited to participate in “A Conversation with Shaquille O’Neal,” the 2023 Pellom McDaniels Sports History Program featured guest, on Wednesday, March 1, at 4:00 p.m. at the Emory Student Center. A limited number of places are available by registering here.
A revered cultural icon, O’Neal is best known for an NBA career that spanned nearly two decades and earned him the sport’s top honors, including induction into the NBA Hall of Fame.
O’Neal’s extrajudicial accolades rival his athletic achievements, having found success in acting, music, television and gaming. O’Neal is currently an analyst on TNT’s Emmy-winning show Inside The NBA.
No stranger to Atlanta, O’Neal owns several businesses across the city, records his podcast (“The Big Podcast”) at Turner Studios, and is an investor in Steady, an Atlanta start-up company known as “Income Platform” means the build-your-own workforce.”
The Pellom McDaniels Sports History Program is designed to encourage public conversation about race, sports, and African American history. Named in honor of the late Dr. Pellom McDaniels III, Curator of the African American Collections in Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, the annual program, hosted by Carl Suddler of Emory’s Department of History, seeks to promote the African Americans in Sports holdings in the RoseLibrary.
McDaniels once called the sport “one of the last dawnings of serious exploration of African-American history and life that may unveil the complex nature of blackness throughout American history.” This year’s program is designed to demonstrate that truth.
Launched in 2021, the event brings nationally recognized scholars, journalists and athletes to campus to engage with students, staff and faculty.
Past guests include William C. Rhoden, award-winning New York Times sports columnist; Howard Bryant, a senior writer for ESPN; and Elle Duncan, award-winning journalist and presenter for ESPN’s Sportscenter.
