TOPEKA (KSNT) — Yancy Ayres is a scout for the San Francisco Giants and joined K-Nation on Sunday.
Ayres lives in Topeka and scouts five states, including Kansas, for the Giants.
He gave some advice for young baseball players.
“Play any sport,” Ayres said. “Don’t focus on just one, because we want to see the athlete as much as we want to see the baseball player. I watch the kids play basketball and I watch them play soccer. Just be an athlete first and everything will take care of itself.”
Additionally, Ayres says his scouting report goes far beyond a player’s physical ability.
“I spend just as much time watching them in the shelter as I do outside the shelter,” Ayres said. “It’s not just them. It’s how their teammates react to them and how they lead on the field that matters.”
He pays attention to how potential customers deal with failure.
“Sometimes, like men, especially high school kids, they’ve never failed before,” he said. “So we want to see them get hit in the mouth and see how they react.”
Believe it or not, parents of prospective parents can have their decisions included too.
“If there’s a crazy parent out there that just goes crazy, that plays a part in, ‘Okay, these kids have been pushed a little bit in a direction that a lot of kids might not have done.'”
Ayres says for a prospect they are interested in, the scouting report will go back as far as possible, including interviews with past coaches or coaches those athletes have had in other sports.
