The former coach of Mikaela Shiffrin was picked up from a well-known ski school in Vermont.
Mike Day, who coached Shiffrin to 65 of her record-breaking 88 World Cup wins, has been appointed director of athlete development at Mount Mansfield Academy in Stowe.
Day, a Stowe resident, has nearly three decades of ski racing experience and has taught and mentored skiers from the juniors to the sport’s elite, according to the Mount Mansfield Academy press release announcing the hiring.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Mike to the MMA family. His years of international experience at the highest level of the sport will be invaluable to our student-athletes,” said Igor Vanovac, Executive Director of Mount Mansfield Academy, in a Explanation. “Mike’s commitment to the future of alpine ski racing and helping young racers learn and grow is critical to the development of our athletes and we honor and support his dedication to the sport.”

In his position, Day will coach athletes of all ages and help develop the coaching staff. Mount Mansfield Academy’s program includes over 260 athletes. The academy is also an educational institution offering full-time tuition for grades 6-12.
“Having worked with the US National Team for years, I look forward to bringing my athlete development experience to competitive junior racers in Vermont,” Day said in a statement. “I look forward to working in Stowe and calling home the challenging and technical trail ‘Main Street’ and training student-athletes on the best ski mountain in the east.”
Day coached Shiffrin, the most decorated and most successful skier in Alpine World Cup history, from 2016 until last month. Shiffrin, who went to school and trained at Burke Mountain Academy, unexpectedly announced a split from Day in the middle of the World Cup in France.
