The Mexican Grand Prix is live on 5 Live and the   Sports website

Valtteri Bottas led Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two victory over Red Bulls Max Verst -pen in the first practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Verst -pen’s team-mate Sergio Perez both fell on the last corner and damaged their rear wings.

Bottas led Hamilton 0.076 seconds ahead. Verst -pen was 0.123 seconds behind Finn.

The Dutchman leads Hamilton in the title race with 12 points ahead of Hamilton, five Grands Prix remaining.

Verst -pen is a strong favorite to win at a track where Red Bull has tended to excel in recent years.

There was no race in Mexico last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, after the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas two weeks ago, it is only the second endurance race since Covid started.

The session was marked by a lack of grip due to the dusty track, with the cars throwing up clouds of dust on the first few l -s before the track was cleaned up.

Perez recovered from his spin and at the end of the session moved up to fourth-fastest position, while Leclerc was eighth, behind Alpha Tauris Pierre Gasly, the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and Alpines Fernando Alonso.

Esteban Ocon from Alpine and Sebastian Vettel from Aston Martin completed the top 10.

Hamilton and Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Räikkönen were examined by the stewards after the session because they had not returned to the track in accordance with the rules after exiting the first corner. Both received only one reprimand.

McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris were 14th and 15th, while George Russell was 17th for Williams.

Both Alpha Tauris Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martins Lance Stroll will start from the bottom of the grid on Sunday due to penalties for using too many engine parts after they both installed new engines.
