The whole panel had their first day of development at the University of Stirling.
Ione Dobson and Ailsa Gault talk about why they got involved with the panel and what they hope to achieve in their two years.
Earlier this month, the entire collective of SportsScotland Young People’s Sport Panel met in person for the first time at the start of their two year journey together. The panel hosted a development day at the University of Stirling and during their first meeting together they discussed ideas on how to shape and influence sport in Scotland and how they can work together to make the most impact with their time as a group.
The panel is made up of young people aged 15 to 23 and comes from across Scotland from Shetland to Dumfries. Each of them comes from a different sporting background and has had different experiences of how they got into sport and what motivated them to be part of the Young People’s Sport Panel.
Two members from Edinburgh, Ione Dobson, 16, and Ailsa Gault, 21, are part of this group of 20 young leaders and have their own individual journey in sport and hope to capitalize on their own experiences during their time on the board .
Ailsa and is currently completing her Honors degree in Physical Education at the University of Edinburgh. Speaking of her love of the sport, Ailsa said: “Athletics has been my primary sport for almost a decade and nothing beats the team spirit and community spirit in the athletics world. I think that due to the high level of social interaction involved in sport, sport is a great way to build self-esteem, which arguably has a positive impact on mental well-being. I also think that sport can help people discover true self-confidence and purpose, and further foster a lifelong commitment to an active lifestyle.”
Ione is an avid ice hockey player who has played for both her school and local club for a number of years and has recently taken on a new coaching role. Explaining what prompted her to apply to the panel, she said: “I want to help raise awareness of the link between mental health and sport. I think one of the biggest challenges for young people in sport right now is balancing a full workload with training. The impact this can have on a person’s mental health is really serious and can impact both a person’s education and work.”
Chief Executive of SportsScotland, Forbes Dunlop said: “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the full panel and getting to know them on their first day of development in Stirling and I know we have another group of inspirational individuals from across the country and with different sporting backgrounds have backgrounds. who will champion sport in Scotland.”
“The commitment and passion for sport that our Young People’s Sport Panel has shown over the past 10 years has been phenomenal and I have no doubt that this next panel will have a similar impact on sport and physical activity across the country becomes.”
