Former Leicester City boss Craig Levein has backed Ange Postecoglou towards a move south to the Premier League – but not before he has finished his work at Celtic.
Levein was on the King Power hotseat from 2004 to 2006 before managing Scotland and hailing the work of Brendan Rodgers during his tenure.
But the Scot insisted Postecoglou, who has been linked with the vacant Foxes job, had no need to rush a move to the Premier League as a move is likely to happen if he maintains his excellent form at Celtic.
“Brendan Rodgers did an amazing job at Leicester, that FA Cup win will be a long-lasting memory for the fans,” said Levein, who attended the opening of the 2023 eScottish Football Cup at Hampden Park on Wednesday alongside Celtic legend Jackie McNamara spoke.
“Ange is doing a great job at Celtic I think sometime in the future and if he continues to let his team play like they are now then he will get the attention of clubs in the South.”
Levein was speaking ahead of the launch of the eScottish Football Cup, a new competition where 75 fans from across Scotland will compete to be the best in the FIFA 23 Hampden Park video game on May 20th and 21st.
The players will return to the scene of Scotland’s famous 2-0 win over Spain last month which put them on pole position to qualify for Euro 2024 and Levein celebrated the current line-up of stars that Steve Clarke are available as the best in a generation.
“I think we have the best squad of players we’ve had in a long, long time,” Levein said.
“They play at a really good level in the Premier League. The team is quite young, they’re growing together and Steve has a real connection with them. That shows in the improvement we’ve seen across the team.
“I wasn’t confident but I had high hopes that we could beat Spain and that came true. It wasn’t a coincidence; It was a pretty solid display and it gives us a great start to this campaign.
“The dynamic of the team is excellent at the moment, the cohesion is noticeable and also the way in which people fight for each other on the pitch.”
The eScottish Football Cup takes place on 20/21. Held at Hampden Park in May, up to 75 clubs from across the country compete for a £50,000 prize pool
