Judo for Sport – British Judo

Judoka consistently advocate the role of judo as a foundational sport due to its benefits in complementing and improving athletic performance.

Judo involves a combination of strength, endurance, flexibility and agility. All physical characteristics that can be transferred well to many other sports. Judo is known to be used to support team sports such as rugby and as a form of cross-training to support other martial arts.

Dave and Louise Dunsford, coaches at Knaresborough Judo Club, ran two judo training sessions for Harrogate Rugby Club’s U15 team earlier this year as part of preparations for the 2023/24 season.

This team, which secured victory at this year’s Yorkshire Cup, took part in judo sessions with a group of at least 20 players, demonstrating remarkable skills.

The young athletes demonstrated exceptional respect and exemplary behavior, making them a joy to teach.

Rhys Silverwood, head coach of Knaresborough Judo Club, said: “Following discussions with Dave, Harrogate Rugby has coordinated a series of judo training sessions for players. Because they are both contact sports, there are similarities between the two sports that allow rugby players to improve skills, athleticism and behaviors that intersect between the two sports.”

“Judo allows players to understand the importance of technique, momentum and efficiency in close contact with opponents – aspects that can easily be overlooked when training in a rugby environment.” Learning judo techniques in a controlled and safe manner Environment has opened players’ eyes to new methods of dealing with scenarios before, during and after contact. “

“Some of the techniques can be directly transferred to rugby and increase players’ confidence in contact. Judo also recognizes the importance of core strength, stability and flexibility, which are key requirements for rugby readiness.”

“Judo also prides itself on the discipline of its players and the respect they show their opponents. I believe these aspects are directly transferable to the rugby environment and help the coaching staff and players set standards on and off the field.”

Knaresborough Judo continues to support Harrogate Rugby Club throughout the current campaign.

Another example of how judo complements other sports is a recent collaboration between GB Judo and West Bromwich Albion’s Youth Academy, where GB Judo coaches deliver judo lessons to members of the WBA Academy players.
