OREGON, Wisconsin – Jacob Gomes has established himself as one of the top stars of late modeling on the West Coast after winning multiple championships and major races in and around California.
Gomes will compete in the Joe Shear Classic on May 7th, which will be the second stop on the ASA STARS National Tour schedule at Madison Int’l Speedway.
Gomes has already won a trio of Southwest Tour events this season, finishing eighth in the ASA STARS National Tour opener at Fives Flag Speedway in March.
“I’m really looking forward to going to more different tracks than we usually do. I’m just looking forward to going to Wisconsin and racing there,” Gomes said. “Lots of good guys racing over there, it would be cool to get some racing time there.
“I know we’re going to Madison and if all goes well and we somehow get in the top three and don’t get torn up, I think our plan goes to Wilkesboro. We are definitely planning on visiting a few more, not sure what we have on the list. We will try to do a lot more races on the east coast and get more time there.”
As with most races on his schedule, Madison will be a track he sees for the first time when he arrives for race weekend. Looking at past Joe Shear Classic races has helped him prepare as best he can for next weekend’s race.
“I’ve looked at a lot of the past Joe Shear Classics and tried to see what reboots are like and how everything works. I looked on iRacing and there was no track there so I just watch a lot of videos from previous races.”
Perhaps no West Coast rider has been hotter than Gomes since the start of last season. He won three races en route to his second SRL Southwest Tour Championship in 2022, and this year has started even better after winning all three races contested with the series so far this season.
“We had a really good year last year, put on a streak and became champions. This year we’re having a bit of a streak again, but we’re willing to give up a streak to learn as much as we can and go where all the competition is,” said Gomes. “It’s cool when you have four really good guys on the west coast, but you go to the east coast and you have our four good guys there and all the good guys from back there. It’s cool to compete against good competition.”
