When Leon Bailey fell to the ground after the final whistle, one might have thought he had just missed a chance to win the title.
The Jamaican winger failed to capitalize on his glorious opportunity to seal a comeback for Aston Villa against Derby rivals Wolves when he fired wide after being rounded by goalkeeper Jose Sa in the 94th minute.
A tearful Bailey was comforted by his teammates when the draw was confirmed and later posted on Instagram that the miss was “really hard to take” adding: “I’m very disappointed in myself”.
Unai Emery said the tears were a positive. “If he cries, it’s because he felt himself,” said the Villa manager. “Being responsible is good.”
Villa fell well short of their recent performances under new boss Emery in the first half, but the Spaniard’s players put in a strong finish that saw Danny Ings – superbly assisted by Tyrone Mings – score a point at Villa Park.
The late equalizer put the hosts in 11th place, three points behind tenth-placed Chelsea and seven points over the last three, while ensuring the momentum of Sunday’s impressive win at Tottenham was not lost.
