PIACAGUERA INDIGENOUS LAND, Brazil — The first Peruibe Indigenous Games were held last weekend to celebrate local culture and award participants wooden medals in archery, tug of war, soccer, a Brazilian indigenous wrestling sport called uca-uca, a wooden beam relay race the beach, dart bubbles and others. About 120 athletes from the Guarani, Tupi-Guarani and Fulnió ethnic groups took part in the competitions in the indigenous land of the Piacaguera. The indigenous peoples, who are spread out in 17 villages around Peruibe, often hold their sporting events during other celebrations of their culture. Chief Awa Tenondegua dos Santos says: “We didn’t expect so many people here.”
