Saturday’s inaugural Skyline Park Pickleball Tournament turned out to be a big hit as 64 players — 32 women and 32 men playing in women’s and men’s doubles competition — took to the courts at Skyline Park in New Brighton.
Partners were chosen randomly via hat pick, and played in round-robin format.
“I am thrilled by today’s turn out. The competition was terrific.” said Tom Cartelli, the tournament director.
“For many, this was their first experience playing at Skyline Park,” said Ruth Sacks Marlin, co-leader of Skyline Pickleball. “Everyone was impressed with the courts and the beautiful community garden and playground. Skyline is not just a pickleball court. It’s a community park and we love being part of the community. It’s awesome to bring this sport to the community, especially to the North Shore.”
Competitor Tina Mazzone said, “It’s always fun with our pickleball peeps.”
For others, the sport is a way to get a way from the real world for a couple of hours.
“I feel like I go to play pickleball and all my worries go away,” said Mike Anderson.
For those playing the sport, they try to keep from “getting pickled,” which means losing 11-0 without scoring a point.

“My partner Paul and I played great and won silver, but getting pickled in the championship game left a sour taste in my mouth,” said Joey Jew. “I had no expectations and I had a great time.”
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States, and on Staten Island, participation has skyrocketed, especially on the North Shore, according to Sacks Marlin.
Sacks Marlin noted that the Skyline group has blossomed from zero members to 358 as of today, less than three months after the opening of the Skyline pickleball courts.

The Skyline courts officially opened on June 14, 2023, by Borough President Vito Fossella and Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks, along with the Skyline Pickleball community.
