Online or offline, there is no place for abuse in sport or life – but how can we eliminate it?
The issue has come to the fore in recent days as members of the McEntee family have been forced to defend Andy McEntee over the abuse he suffered after he indicated he would not be running for the position of Meath football manager would advance.
His son Shane has come out to say he is being forced to defend his father following “online abuse” and “letters to the house” which no doubt included some harsh words as well. Criticism is one thing, hurtful abuse is another.
“I saw him get a lot of stick,” Shane wrote. “I always separated my father from being a manager. I think we were really good at that, to be honest. But I don’t have to do that anymore, so I responded.”
Meath GAA outlined yesterday how it intends to express its “disgust at the recent personal abuse of our members”.
The statement continued: “Unfortunately, this has become a regular incident where individuals representing Meath GAA are abused while representing our organisation.
“We welcome and encourage our members to engage in meaningful conversations on our social media channels. However, this must never escalate into abusive behavior towards individuals.
“We understand the frustration that fans feel when our teams don’t perform as we all think is right. This frustration is felt most by the team itself. True fans will support our teams when it’s not easy.”
Criticism, especially constructive criticism, has its place, but not comments aimed at slander.
But what can we do to stop it?
