With all the games played, the matches fought and the races run, it’s time to determine the metro area’s best of the best for the 2021-22 high school academic calendar.
The early stages of that difficult work — the decisions aren’t always easy for the journal’s high school athletic expert James Yodice — will be unveiled in this day’s athletic section with the 20 Athletes of the Year, identified by sport, drawn from last fall. From soccer, football and cross-country skiing in the fall to baseball, softball and track and field in the spring, the choices are revealed here.
On Saturday, the Journal announces its selection for this year’s Overall Male Athlete of the Year.
And on Sunday, the Journal does the same for its overall Athlete of the Year.
