Tasmanian driver Jock Goodyer won the 60th Australian Sprint Car Championship on February 11 at Perth’s Motorplex Raceway.
At the wheel of the Platinum Prints car, Goodyer defeated Queenslander Lachlan McHugh (Leigh Smith Yachts) and Western Australian Callum Williamson (Avalon Group) for the coveted title.
They were chased home in the 35-lap final by Jamie Veal (SWI Earthworks), Kerry Madsen (Krikke Motorsports/Mobil) and defending champion Marcus Dumesny (Valvoline).
In the attrition race, only 11 of the original 24 cars completed the event. Victims included Brock Hallett, Tate Frost and Matt Egel.
Goodyer described his mount as “the best car he’s ever driven,” improving on his third place finish in the previous national championship.
After qualifying on pole, Goodyer opted to start outside of McHugh. He won the attack up to the first corner and despite numerous stoppages he never took the lead.
Ian Madsen (DTM Motorsport) was running into second place early in the race but his engine failed on lap 15.
It was a fitting result as 21-year-old Goodyer and 24-year-old McHugh were the most impressive Australians this summer. In all, the young Tasmanian has won six feature films this season.
Jamie Veal went into last night the favorite to claim his third national title after dominating the first night’s preliminary match.
The driver from Warrnambool, Victoria led the 25-lap race from flag to flag, leading Lachlan McHugh, Jock Goodyer, Kerry Madsen and Matt Egel home.
Dumesny brothers Matt and Marcus had a disappointing season. After rolling the Monte Motorsports entry in the Prelude two nights earlier, Matt found himself upside down again at Turn 1 of the Preliminary Feature.
Marcus, the Australian title holder, was turned upside down in the last running race the night before. As the reigning Australian champion, the Valvoline driver only made it onto the last row of the grid.
