There is a trade with City Section Sports. Sun Valley Poly, North Hollywood and Chavez will leave the East Valley League this fall and join the Valley Mission League for all sports. They’ll trade places with three teams moving from the Valley Mission League to the East Valley League – Panorama, Monroe and Reseda.
The City Council is expected to approve the redesign at its next meeting. The new league alignments are Arleta, Grant, Monroe, Panorama, Reseda and Verdugo Hills in East Valley and Canoga Park, Chavez, Kennedy, North Hollywood, Poly, San Fernando and Sylmar in Mission Valley.
At Tuesday’s City Section Executive Committee meeting, it was announced that Pasadena City College is the likely venue for the City Section Open Division Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball semifinals and finals on February 18 and 25, subject to the approval of a insurance requirement . Roybal, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, refused to make its website available.
It’s utterly ridiculous that Roybal, with the largest gym in LAUSD, can’t be used to host city basketball finals. The gym was built to accommodate 3,000 people to host top LAUSD events. Down to Kennedy, Hamilton or Birmingham. Embarrassment.

The same situation with Roybal happened last year until LAUSD’s intervention. This time the city section decided to go ahead. Just last month, LAUSD invited actor George Clooney to Roybal to demonstrate a new specialized academy at the school.
When Roybal opened in 2008, its gym was built larger than most in LAUSD with a commitment that others could use it for sporting events. The City Section wanted Roybal to host wrestling championships, but that too was turned down.
In addition, the Executive Committee voted to recommend girls’ flag football as a new sport for this fall. The board is expected to give approval at its meeting and then final approval is up to the CIF State Federation Council on February 2nd.
Animo Jackie Robinson’s eight-man football team is facing sanctions over a playoff incident last fall in which the school refused to provide officials with the name of their coach.
The City Section is considering changes to the way it uses teams for its football playoffs after commissioner Vicky Lagos called a “flood of complaints from coaches and schools”. The City Section primarily seeded teams based on rankings from CalPreps.com. The Match Committee decides on any adjustments in consultation with an advisory football committee.
