Well, my knee feels pretty good now. It feels pretty damn weak though. You know, I need to get strong and start training this week. I’m going to start training to get a bit stronger, I feel weak but I don’t know, I’m doing pretty well with it. There’s a hell of a lot of pressure. You know, the game plan says number one: Many magazines will give you high praise. You’re starting to feel it at all. Hey, it’s mid-July and you’ll be at camp in another month. Well, there will be pressure on me, but it just comes with the fact that if you’re going for a national championship, you have to get that ranking earlier in the season, and I think that will help us. a lot but the pressure will be there and if you want to win you will be the hero, if you lose you know that comes with the territory and you just have to accept the pressure. Last time I spoke to you, you were thinking about going to Cape Cod to play this year, and all of a sudden you’re playing summer league baseball in Pittsburgh. Yes, I thought about going to Cape Cod, but I thought it would be better because it will be better to stay here next season and Pittsburgh will work for the next football season because I thought that I won’t be drafted. It wouldn’t be a big advantage for me to go out there. In fact, it would be a damn disadvantage.

Dan Marino was an All-American at Pitt who went on to a Pro Football Hall of Fame career in the NFL, but the Pittsburgh native was also a top baseball prospect at the time. In the summer of 1980, WTAE caught up with him as a former Central Catholic High School star on the diamond in Lawrenceville as he prepared for his sophomore year at Pitt.
