Crestview senior three-sport Cade Hancox was named Student Athlete of the Week

COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WKBN) – Not all athletes are as committed to their school as Crestview’s Cade Hancox.

“Sport is obviously fun, you get there and you have fun, but the biggest thing for me is just having that bond with your teammates, having those friends,” Hancox said. “As you walk down the hall or every time you walk down the graduating stage, you can look back and say, ‘Wow, I had a really fun time in high school and I’m going to miss all of these people when I go.”

The three-sport senior is senior class president, vice president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the French Club, and participates in school musicals through the Drama Club.

“It’s just a cool experience. We have a fantastic PAC, it gives all students a great opportunity to do exactly what they want to do and have fun doing it,” Hancox said.

You might think that one high school kid’s involvement in all of this — plus football, basketball, and baseball — could cause it to fall behind in other areas, but not at Hancox.

“I usually do all my homework at school, but when I don’t I just spend an hour or two at home to get all that stuff done. I’m just making sure everything is in place for the next day and preparing for the next day,” Hancox said.

And it works well since Hancox will graduate with a 4.0 GPA. He says all that classroom work is a key reason he excels at sports too.

“For me, sport is at least 90% mental. If you can’t, if you don’t know what you’re doing, or if you can’t get where you need to go, you just can’t do it,” Hancox said. “Being able to use my brain to help me makes up for some other things I lack in athletic ability, strength or speed.”
