Construction begins – Box Hill’s first sports and recreation area

Work has begun on Box Hill’s first-ever sports and recreation area.

Machines are now on site and are working to convert the 5.3-acre site on Brindle Parkway into two full-size rectangular playing fields that can also be used as a cricket oval. The reserve also includes two cricket practice nets, as well as a basketball half-court, a utility building, a children’s playground with picnic facilities, and a 130-car parking lot.

In addition, the reserve will also include a nature trail and shared trails surrounded by native trees and plants, connecting to the wider Shire network of trails.

The Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr. Peter Gangemi said this is an exciting step forward in bringing new facilities online for the growing Box Hill community.

“We are very excited to start construction of Box Hill’s first sports and recreation area,” said Mayor Gangemi.

“This project will provide the sporting and recreational facilities this new community needs – now and in the future. It also complements the Council’s ongoing investments in providing quality sports facilities that promote health, well-being and connectedness with the community,” he added.

The next phase of construction will involve importing soil to achieve the required design level and this will happen between January and February 2023.

Mayor Gangemi said residents will notice works taking place during this time, as well as trucks entering and exiting the site and using the surrounding road network.

“We will use the school holiday season, when traffic is usually less, to get as much done as possible without unduly inconveniencing residents,” Mayor Gangemi said.

“I would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding and look forward to people using this new sports complex very soon,” he added.

The new reserve is expected to open in mid-2024, weather permitting.
