Conor McGregor claimed on social media on New Year's Eve that he would fight Michael Chandler in the middleweight division on June 29.
It was originally announced in February that McGregor would face Chandler at a later date in 2023, in the Irishman's first fight since breaking his leg in July 2021. However, the fight still has not taken place, and McGregor has since hinted that he will could even face a different opponent in his UFC comeback.
However, on Sunday (December 31), the former champion seemingly confirmed that he will fight Chandler next, while also claiming that the fight will take place at middleweight and in Las Vegas. The UFC has yet to confirm the fight.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Happy New Year to all of you,” McGregor, 35, said in a video on X. “I would like to announce the return date for myself, the 'infamous' Conor McGregor.”
“The greatest comeback of all time will take place on June 29th in Las Vegas for International Fight Week. And the opponent: Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler: 185 pounds.”
McGregor previously held the UFC featherweight and lightweight titles simultaneously, becoming the first dual-weight champion in the promotion's history. American Chandler, meanwhile, is a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion.
In McGregor's last fight, he suffered a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, six months after the American defeated him by knockout. Chandler, 37, also fought Poirier in his last fight, losing by submission in November 2022.
