Che Adams praised Southampton’s character after a “perfect day” for the victorious super-sub at home team Leicester.
A week after coming from a two-goal deficit in a 2-2 draw with Leeds, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men found themselves suffering again after falling behind from a James Maddison free-kick at the King Power Stadium.
Adams was unable to start midweek with a groin problem but changed the dynamic of Saturday’s game from the bench, firing home from close range before his stunning scissor shot sealed a 2-1 victory for Saints.
“Delighted,” said the Southampton striker. “Getting the three points and scoring two goals is a perfect day.
“We have a very, very big character. We have a young team and everyone is just trying to learn their craft on their positions in football.
“Congratulations to the whole team. Like I said, everyone is pretty young so it will take time but we’re getting there.”
Averaging 23 years 238 days, Southampton’s starting XI at Leicester was the youngest they have ever featured in the Premier League.
It was a promising performance they will look to build on at a difficult time, with league home games against Manchester United and Chelsea after Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash in Cambridge.
“It doesn’t get much bigger, does it?” Adams told the club media when asked about their next Premier League games.
“Scoring as many points as possible as quickly as possible gives us the best lead and we will continue to work hard for that.
“No game is going to be easy in the Premier League so trying to get as many points as possible, especially away from home, at the end of the season it will be huge for us.”
Leicester travel to Stockport in the Carabao Cup ahead of the same league opponents as Saints. On Saturday we head to Chelsea, followed by the arrival of Erik ten Hags United.
That game falls on transfer deadline day – a moment Brendan Rodgers will be relieved to see his back amid speculation swirling around his players.
Wesley Fofana has been dropped from the matchday squad due to interest from Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans and Maddison are also attracting interest.
One man definitely staying is Jamie Vardy, whose new deal with Leicester was announced until 2024 hours before kick-off against Saints.
“It was great this morning but of course it’s bittersweet when we have the result we had,” the 35-year-old told LCFC TV.
“So I’m not going to think about it too much now, we have to make sure we pull ourselves together and make sure we’re bringing our A game every week now. Nobody ever wants to lose a game.
“We want to win as many as possible, that’s what football is about, getting the points and then going into the dressing room happy, so it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but that’s the work we have to put in.”
