Charlotte Jorst has decided to retire her number one horse in the stable, 20-year-old KWPN stallion Nintendo. The horse competed in his final show at the 2023 Palm Beach Dressage Derby on March 2-3, 2023.
Nintendo is a 2003 born Dutch Warmblood by Negro out of Rodieni R (by Monaco x Glendale).
VanOst
Originally owned by Gert-Jan van Olst, Nintendo was originally called Waterloo.
He was presented at the KWPN Stallion Licensing in 2006, but rejected in the stallion performance test. In 2007 he was presented again at the subsequent licensing, but again rejected by the licensing committee. Instead, Van Olst presented the 5-year-old Nintendo at the smaller NRPS licensing company in 2008, where it was accepted. His name then changed from Waterloo to Nintendo.
Denmark
The stallion was sold to Anna Kasprzak as a future Grand Prix horse, but she never clicked with him. In 2012 the horse moved to Andreas Helgstrand’s stables to be prepared and sold.

2013 CDIO RotterdamHelgstrand’s assistant coach Thomas Sigtenbjerggaard started national Nintendo competitions in Denmark in November 2012. In 2013 the pair made their international debut, taking part in CDIs in Mannheim, Rotterdam and Falsterbo. They were the guinea pigs at the 2013 European Dressage Championships in Herning. The Sigtenbjerggaard/Nintendo duo became the focus of a Rollkur debate that flared up after the 2013 Danish Grand Prix Championships in Denmark.
USA
In November 2013, Nintendo sold to Danish-born American Charlotte Jorst as their Grand Prix schoolmaster. Jorst was then on a shopping spree in Helgstrand and bought a number of horses there, many of which were returned because they were unfit or didn’t get along with the rider. However, Nintendo proved to be the best match and the horse was a true partner for her that aged like red wine.
Nine years non-stop, from 2014 to 2023, Jorst and Nintendo competed on the international show scene. According to the FEI database, the pair recorded no fewer than 123 CDI competition starts in their career together, and 25 of those were victories!
At the 2016 World Cup Finals, their goal was team selection for the Olympics, but they never made it onto that elite US team. Instead, Jorst and Nintendo represented the USA for the first time at the 2015 CDIO Nations Cup in Rotterdam and Hagen. 2017 at the CDIOs in Falsterbo and Hickstead, 2019 in Wellington and Geesteren; and 2021 and 2022 in Aachen.
They also represented the USA at the 2016 World Cup finals in Gothenburg, where they placed 12th in the Kur finals
retirement
Jorst and Nintendo consistently scored 70% points, but most recently their Grand Prix score in Wellington has stuck at 68% and 67% respectively. Charlotte has now decided to retire her 20-year-old after a 5th place finish in World Cup qualifiers on March 3, 2023 in Wellington.
Jorst and Nintendo at CDIO Aachen 2021 “That was the hardest week. Nintendo is retiring. He is 20 years old. No partnership will ever be the same. “I wasn’t brave, it was such a tough decision. Every time I even think about it, I start crying. I probably waited too long, it’s hard to say because he wants it so much and after Friday night he was so happy. It was one of the best nights of his life!”
A special farewell party is planned for the CDI 5* Wellington on March 17th.
Jorst sees Zhaplin Langholt as Nintendo’s successor at Grand Prix level. She also has three Nintendo clones who are now yearlings.
