Brentford defender Ben Mee says the international break can be “frustrating” trying to maintain standards when key players are away in their countries.
The Bees had 16 players called up this month, including 11 players for senior duty and five for senior duty with their country’s youth teams.
Mee remained at Brentford and reflected on the break on ` Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily.
“We had a good break,” he said. “We didn’t have many players visiting us, so as usual it was a bit quiet during the international break. We had a few days off and then went in and worked hard.”
“It was nice to go out on the training pitch with just a few of us and work on a few things ourselves. Sometimes it feels like a little pre-season preparation. During this time you probably do more work than during the games. “It’s coming faster and faster. You work more than normal weeks and we also played a friendly on Saturday so we still had a game to play with a few other guys.
“You train with young boys and sometimes it can be a bit frustrating because the standard of training of the younger boys is not as high as it normally is when the whole group is there.”
“They are still learning and it can be a bit frustrating at times. You’re where other guys aren’t and you have to try to stay at the same level.”
