Birmingham 1-1 Millwall: Jay Stansfield’s goal keeps the Blues undefeated

Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic saved Scott Hogan’s penalty in first-half added time

A second-half equalizer from Jay Stansfield secured Birmingham City’s unbeaten start to the Championship and tied the points with Millwall.

Fulham loanee Stansfield scored his second goal in two games for the Blues eight minutes after the break.

That canceled out Kevin Nisbet’s early free-kick and the Scottish striker scored his second Lions goal.

Birmingham had missed a penalty in first-half injury time when Scott Hogan’s shot was saved by Matija Sarkic.

The tie prevented the Blues from claiming a fourth consecutive championship win for the first time since October 2018, but they have an impressive 11 points from five games.

They included Cody Drameh, who arrived on Deadline Day after being loaned from Leeds but at St Andrew’s they were within six minutes.

When Tom Bradshaw was fouled outside the box, Nisbet came forward from 20 yards after his summer move from Hibernian and scored in consecutive games despite falling into the hands of John Ruddy.

The visitors thought they had taken a two-point lead when George Saville saved a corner kick 25 yards from Ryan Leonard and the defender volleyed in a shot that flew past Ruddy, although the latter netted Jake Cooper on the way, who was flagged for offside stood position.

They lost captain Shaun Hutchinson to injury and suffered disappointment at the end of the half when Sarkic brought down Keshi Anderson, but the Montenegrin goalkeeper made up for it by jumping right to save Hogan’s penalty.

However, the Blues equalized early in the second half when Juninho Bacuna slipped in Stansfield’s penalty area and the Fulham loanee put the ball into the far corner.

The 20-year-old almost put his team ahead, but Sarkic saved his powerful shot.

Saville tried to restore Millwall’s lead when Ruddy saved, but the game ended in a draw for the fifth consecutive season at St Andrew’s, giving the south London side seven points from their five games.
