WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (April 8) approved the naming of the Donald J. McCrosky Equine Sports Medicine Center. The donation from Dr. Donald McCrosky will provide $3 million in research funding now and in the future to continue the center’s groundbreaking work.
“I look forward to helping students learn and advance equine medicine,” said McCrosky.
Since opening in 1996, the center has provided comprehensive assessments for underperforming equine patients and pioneered cutting-edge equine research. As an educational institution, the center continues to provide the highest level of training for future veterinarians, providing quality continuing education to veterinarians and the equine community.
Center Director Dr. Laurent Couetilwho specializes in equine respiratory health and treats equine asthma, said this gift is a “huge boost” for his team as they work to understand and treat conditions affecting the equine industry and its athletes .
“Don McCrosky’s donation will advance research into equine health and performance. We anticipate benefits for thousands of horses and their owners in the years to come.” Couetil called.
Horses have always been a part of McCrosky’s life. McCrosky grew up on a farm in Rochester, Indiana, and learned to drive his father’s team of horses at the age of 5. His grandfather, also a farmer, gave him his first horse.
McCrosky received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Purdue, graduating in 1968. He then opened his own practice, which included small and large animals. In 2004 he sold his small animal practice to focus exclusively on equine medicine with a focus on reproduction. In addition to his practice, McCrosky and his wife Lois own more than 50 racehorses and broodmares which they ride in the Chicago and St. Louis area. In addition to naming the center, McCrosky has named a consultation room at the Shelbyville Equine Center and an outpatient exam room at the new David and Bonnie Brunner Purdue Veterinary Medical Hospital Complex. The complex was inaugurated on Friday (April 8).
“Purdue has been good to me,” McCrosky said of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “I am fortunate to be able to give something back. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Purdue.”
Willie Reed, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, said: “Don has been a consistent advocate for the College and a champion of equine medicine. We are grateful for his generosity and example for future veterinarians. Don’s legacy sets a new path for equine health.”
