Oxford United 1-2 Sunderland – ` Sport

Substitute Elliot Embleton scored an 89th-minute winner to give Sunderland a crucial win at play-off pursuers Oxford in front of a packed Kassam Stadium.

Embleton scored just three minutes after coming on as a substitute in League One and fired home when Ross Stewart played the ball straight to him with the home defense stretched.

The win extended Sunderland’s unbeaten streak to seven games while Oxford’s play-off hopes lie in tatters after three straight defeats.

Both skippers scored in the first half.

Black Cats captain Corry Evans tumbled in the 16th minute when the home defense failed to clear a free-kick and headed home a shot from 14 yards before Elliott Moore headed in Billy Bodin’s free-kick in the 35th minute to equalize for Oxford.

Both sides had early chances when visiting goalkeeper Anthony Patterson turned around Mark Sykes’ shot and Nathan Broadhead saw a try from Luke McNally be blocked down the line at the other end.

Patterson later made a super save to parry Ciaron Brown’s powerful header at the far post.
