So it wouldn’t be crazy if he went deep into New York, allowing you to hedge and guarantee a nice payout later in the event. Paul is another one that should be taken rather seriously. He’s really improved in 2023 and is playing at a top 10 level in this event. Paul probably doesn’t have what it takes to actually win this tournament, but he can create a head start and give you some protection. He made it at the Australian Open.
In the women’s category, I like two players ahead of the draw: Mirra Andreeva and Liudmila Samsonova. Andreeva is only 16 years old, but she has the potential to be an elite player for a very long time. Considering her power play is already very good, I don’t think there’s much stopping her from making a big break at a major early in her career. Don’t be surprised if she causes a stir in New York. As for Samsonova, there aren’t many players in the world who are better than her on hard courts. While she’s not exactly a household name, she’s someone who will demand your attention over the next few weeks.

These courts aren’t as slow as clay and not as fast as grass, so it takes an all-court player to win an event like the US Open. Big servers definitely have some advantage on this surface – as on all surfaces – but it’s debatable if they can’t win longer rallies.
