Tom Brady’s retirement tour is over as it was only about two months before the GOAT returned its decision on his future as a player. When Brady announced his intention to put on the helmet for another season, the Bucs went from a midfield bunch to Super Bowl co-favorites just like that.

Needless to say, Brady’s announcement on Sunday caused a massive ripple effect in betting markets, with NFL odds adjusted to reflect the latest news in an already busy week.

Last week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were listed at +3300 to win this year’s Super Bowl, but following the news, Tampa Bay quickly became a co-favorite with the Buffalo Bills at +750 odds.

Few players are capable of generating that kind of momentum but it shows just how effective the 44-year-old can still be in the eyes of odds-makers.

“We never expected Brady to retire so we had to take all of our futures markets off the board and adjust immediately,” said Adam Burns, head trader at BetOnline. “There’s only a handful of guys in the NFL who can take a team from semi-longshot to Super Bowl favorite, and Tom Brady is obviously one of them. We’re already taking a lot of bets on the Bucs for 2022. “

The Buccaneers jumped past a dozen teams on their way to the top of the Super Bowl odds board.

Bettors also saw some changes in the 2022-23 MVP rating grid. Of course, Brady wasn’t listed as an option when the offseason MVP odds were first released, but he now sits in second place behind Buffalo’s Josh Allen at odds of +900.

Deshaun Watson also made the list following the outcome of his last court appearance and saw he had the third best odds of taking home the award.

“Even if he’s acquitted of all charges, you never know how the league is going to handle a situation like Watson’s because he could still be banned at some level,” Burns added. A suspension could see him fall behind in a few key categories and seemingly wipe out his chances all together should he be sidelined for several games.

“Even so, Watson is a top 5 franchise quarterback and we know there are a lot of teams interested in trading for him. Because of this, we need to protect our exposure with lower odds than it might really deserve.”
