Stocks teetered, ending the day and week down after a cool jobs report: stock market news today

Stocks teetered on Friday, finishing lower as investors digested the release of the monthly US jobs report, which is expected to guide the Federal Reserve’s next move on interest rates.

The S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell about 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) ended down 0.6%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq (^IXIC) led gains early in the session but closed below the zero line. All three averages were also down this week.

US government data showed employers added 209,000 jobs in June, below expectations but still showing a healthy pace of job growth. The unemployment rate fell to 3.6%.

A stronger-than-expected ADP jobs report on Thursday signaled that the US economy is showing resilience amid the Fed’s efforts to fight inflation. Overall, the data helped reinforce bets that the Fed will hike rates again at its July meeting.
