Insight into the positions of the futures markets

COT report reveals positions in futures markets: Commodities in focus

The latest Commitment of Traders (COT) report released by the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) provides an insightful look into the positioning strategies of major traders, for-profit speculators and commercial entities in the futures markets as of January 16th. The report, which covers 11 agricultural commodity markets, shows an overall decline in speculator bets, with four markets seeing an upturn and seven seeing a downturn.

Speculator bets: winners and losers

Leading the gains is cotton with an additional 5,473 contracts, followed by coffee, soybean oil and cocoa, all marking positive changes in speculator contracts. However, the situation was not rosy for all raw materials. Significant declines were observed in soybeans, corn, wheat, soybean meal, sugar, lean hogs and live cattle.

Strength Values: A measure of speculators' positions

When it comes to starch stocks, a metric that evaluates speculators' positions over a three-year period, cocoa and coffee emerged as the strongest contenders. On the other hand, a number of commodities, including soybean meal, corn, soybeans, live cattle, soybean oil, lean pork, sugar and cotton, were in extremely bearish territory and recorded low values.

Strength Score Trends: Track changes over time

The COT Strength Score Trends, which show changes in strength scores over a six-week period, identified coffee and wheat as the leading positive factors. Soybean meal, sugar, soybeans and soybean oil were not so lucky, reflecting negative trend readings.

Net Positions and Positioning Range: A Detailed Overview

The report provides a detailed look at the net positions for each commodity. It also contains the current strength value and the positioning range for the last three years. Additionally, the report provides directional trend classification based on a weekly trend following model. For example, it was found that corn and soybeans were in a strong downward trend, while coffee and cocoa were in an upward trend. This model plays an important role in providing recommendations to hold or maintain a position depending on the market price position trends.

The COT report is a valuable tool for investors, traders and speculators alike. It provides a comprehensive overview of the commodity futures market, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions based on current trends and positioning strategies.
