1. Holiday Market Hours: Grain and Livestock futures close normally on December 22nd and CFTC data will be released as usual on that day. Additionally, livestock feeding, cold storage and hog inventory reports are due December 22nd at 2:00 p.m. Grain and livestock futures markets are closed on Christmas Day. They open December 26th at 8:30am. Markets will repeat this schedule for the New Year holiday, opening normally on December 29, closing on New Year's Day and trading beginning at 8:30 a.m. on January 2. In Canadian markets There will be no canola trading on the ICE on December 26th, Boxing Day.
2. The weather brings a Christmas surprise: And the surprise is? As with any real gift, it remains unknown until the package is opened, or in this case, until the sun comes up. The weather models continue to be consistent, some predicting snow and cold, others predicting mild sunshine. 3. Top Agriculture Stories 2023: We continue our countdown of the 10 most critical stories in agriculture. Because things like this tend to be the case, many of them are still a problem at the end of the year.
4. Tax Law Updates: There are some new adjustments to depreciation and other tax-related rules for the 2024 season. Watch out for our latest version of this.
5. Economic Reports to Watch: Markets are closed on Monday, so there will be no USDA export controls. On Tuesday, the U.S. consumer confidence report for December will be released at 9 a.m., followed by the USDA's weekly export inspections report at 10 a.m. Then on Thursday, the weekly US jobless claims and US drought monitor update will be released at 7:30 a.m., followed by pending US home sales at 9:00 a.m. The Department of Energy's natural gas storage report is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., followed by the Department of Energy's weekly inventory report At 10:00 o'clock. The USDA's weekly export sales report comes out at 7:30 a.m. on Friday; This is the only notable report from the last trading day of 2023.
