Angolan telecommunications giant Unitel is preparing for an initial public offering in 2024, according to a Bloomberg report on Thursday. This strategic move by the Central African country is intended to stimulate economic growth and attract foreign investment to the country.
An IPO is an initial public offering in which shares of a private company are made available to the public for the first time. An IPO allows a company to raise equity capital from public investors. In other words, an IPO refers to the process by which shares of a private company are offered to the public as part of a new stock offering. The process basically offers companies the opportunity to raise capital by offering shares on the primary market.
Unitel, on the other hand, is an Angolan mobile communications company that was founded as a public company in 2001. The company was previously owned by Oi and Helios (through Africatel), the Angolan state oil company Sonangol and local companies such as Geni Holding (through Mercury) and Vidatel.

However, in October 2022, Angolan President João Lourenco issued a decision completing the nationalization of Unitel. Unitel operates a network based on GSM and UMTS standards and offers voice communications, text messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS), as well as mobile Internet access.
As the largest telecommunications company in Angola, Unitel is now a cornerstone of the country's communications infrastructure and its upcoming IPO is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the country's economy and on investors eyeing the emerging Angolan market.

What's next for the Unitel IPO?
Specific details about the development are not yet available, as information on the size of the offer, the company's valuation and the exact timing in 2024 have not been disclosed.

However, since the move is aimed at diversification and sustainability, one could say that Angola is preparing to become an attractive destination for foreign investment.
For potential investors, the Unitel IPO represents an opportunity to participate in the growth of Angola's telecommunications industry while supporting the country's efforts to improve its business environment.
