Legal sports betting took a step closer in Ohio this month when the OCCC confirmed that the first five sports betting licenses had been awarded to various sports betting sites.
Names like bet365, Caesars and PointsBet are just a few of the sportsbooks that have received licenses, and they are set to launch in OH on January 1st.
As of the October 5 deadline, 10 owner applications had been submitted, but it remains to be seen whether the remaining five will be successful.
Missing that deadline would have meant these sportsbooks would have missed a January 1 launch.
Both retail and online sportsbooks will launch in Ohio on January 1st, 2023, with stakeholders now doing everything they can to ensure those in OH have the best betting experience when the time comes.
This comes after HB 29 passed both houses of the Ohio Legislature in December 2021 and was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine on December 22nd.
Up to five different sportsbooks have received sportsbook licenses from the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC), namely: Superbook, BetFred, PointsBet, Caesars and bet365.
These sports betting sites will be some of the first to launch in Buckeye state in the new year, with a number of other sports betting licenses to be awarded in due course.

Not yet. Sports betting will be legalized and live on January 1, 2023, after HB29 goes into effect in December 2021.
All online, mobile and retail sportsbook are scheduled to go live on that date, with five sportsbooks already receiving sportsbook licenses from the OCCC in preparation for the January launch.
More licenses will surely be granted in due course as up to 25 online sportsbooks will be available for those in OH in the new year.
