WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) – As the economy continues to grow in Wichita Falls, members of the community spoke at the State of the Economy Forum about what steps need to be taken to continue the city's growth and help it thrive compete.
Chamber of Commerce CEO Ron Kitchens said the key to building a strong economy is increasing the number of people in the community.

“You know, our support is the people,” Kitchens explained. “So we need to attract more people to the community. That’s an important part of what we’re talking about.”
Kitchens said job growth and low unemployment contribute to the region's economy, but a critical part of that process is honoring citizens' contributions to the community.
The city recognizes its exceptional citizens with the annual Wichitan of the Year award.
This year, for the first time in Wichita Falls history, there were two honorees. The first was Dale Nelson, who was unable to attend the event but thanked him in a video.
“All I can say is thank you,” Nelson said in his video. “I am very proud of the honor.”
The second honoree was Joel Jimenez, who said the people of this community make the award so special.

“It’s just overwhelming gratitude for the people we love here,” Jimenez said. “I'm part of the people and it's just great. You know, it surprised me.”
Nelson and Jimenez have served Wichita Falls for decades and left an influential legacy as leaders in the community.
