Free Naval, Air & Tank Game War Thunder review bombs have gone through the roof as the game’s player base reacts to the now overhauled changes in the game economy, which would have made the game even more difficult to play without paying real money. While the future of War Thunder is uncertain, it’s clear that the community didn’t stand behind what they were faced with.
War Thunder developer and publisher Gaijin informed players that he will be introducing a number of changes to the game’s economy – allowing Silver Lions (SL) currency to be used for vehicle purchases, modifications and repairing damaged vehicles Playing and gaining Research Points (RP). researching new vehicles and units before you can buy them – that would make it much more difficult to progress after games without paying real money.
The premium currency Golden Eagles can also be used to purchase Silver Lions, and according to players this seems to have slowly become more and more necessary to get anywhere in War Thunder.
Before promising to roll back the planned changes to the War Thunder economy, the game’s community was in overdrive. Due to the massive Steam review bombardment, recent reviews were rated as “overwhelmingly negative” as players with over 2,000 hours in game wrote about their issues.
Players are angry and disillusioned with the drop in Silver Lions and Research Points they are already getting through games, even paying for a premium account and using premium vehicles – both of which require real money and increase your SL and RP rewards .
“Gaijin continues to add nations and vehicles while at the same time repair costs increase and RP/SL gain decreases. A premium account is no longer enough to move around comfortably, now you also have to buy premium vehicles in every country,” says Apollo1641 in a detailed Steam review.
In response to overall player feedback, Gaijin said, “We’ve been following the feedback closely and see that while some players generally agree with us, we also see that there are players who feel these changes are for them are not helpful.” For this reason, we have decided not to implement the economic changes.”
Even a cursory glance at the ratings shows that since May 17th there have been thousands of negative reviews every day, many of them from long-time players. I’ve even seen an open letter in the comments of Twitter posts where players suggest the changes they’d like to see instead.
Following this player backlash to the economic changes in War Thunder, Gaijin decided to cancel the planned changes as a “first step” to address general player concerns about the in-game economy and that it is slowly becoming more incentivized for the use of real money has created over the years. In fact, players have been offered a survey to fill out before May 25, 2023.
On paper, this might sound like the end. Gaijin says it will introduce a major economic overhaul of War Thunder in an update this summer, using the survey above as a basis for the changes. The problem is that Gaijin’s creative director, Kirill Yudintsev, also wrote an article about how the economy of free-to-play games like War Thunder works, and how players destroy them.
The article basically breaks down how free-to-play games work and addresses the review bombing. Players criticize Gaijin for not understanding that they know how the model works and instead are frustrated with the developer’s changes to that very model.
“Review bombing hurts the game because new players just don’t try it, while it doesn’t raise their awareness of the issues they’ve noticed,” says Gaijin. “If your goal isn’t to hurt the game, please use other, less destructive ways.”
Still, it looks like the widespread community reaction, from forum comments, Reddit, and even Steam reviews, has resulted in Gaijin changing the way War Thunder’s economy will work, and more besides changes are imminent.
