At a time when the entire industry is pushing for electrification, Stellantis made headlines with the launch of its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six Hurricane.
The engine will be featured across the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer lineup, but before that happens, a limited number of 2022 Grand Wagoneers will be available with the high-performance version producing 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. The EPA has now released fuel economy ratings for this model.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer debuted with a 6.4-liter V8 engine rated by the EPA at 18 miles per gallon highway, 13 miles per gallon city and 15 miles per gallon when paired with all-wheel drive.
The new Hurricane six-cylinder trumps these numbers thanks to smaller displacement and turbochargers. 20 miles per gallon is achievable on the highway, 14 in the city, and 17 combined. The two-wheel-drive specification adds another MPG to the highway rating of both the six- and eight-cylinder models.

Okay, so maybe the numbers themselves aren’t that stunning, but it’s worth noting that the new engine was able to beat the V8 not only in fuel economy, but in power numbers as well.
When the 2023 Wagoneer debuts with the new straight-six, fuel economy numbers should increase due to the standard engine’s output of 420 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Jeep said when the engine was released that the standard performance version would be tuned for fuel economy, so we’re expecting even more impressive results from this mill.
Currently, the Wagoneer is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque.
With seemingly no downsides, there aren’t too many reasons why you’d prefer the V8 over the six, which could be bad news for the future of the eight in the brand’s models. The Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L already use the new supercharged six-cylinder instead of a V8, and it’s likely more models will follow this trend.
