Tri-Cities, WA – With events like the Apple Cup and USAG Tournament coming to the Tri-Cities, the Tri-Cities economy is seeing the impact.
After two years without live events, the Apple Cup is bringing new money to the Tri-Cities and rebuilding the economy.
Hector Cruz, vice president of Visit Tri-Cities, says any money that goes into the economy goes back into the community.
“New dollars coming in and bolstering our tax base. That really helps our cities pay for construction costs or the police and fire departments,” says Cruz.
Much of what the Tri-Cities has to offer are outdoor programs. Cruz encourages the community to get out and explore the Tri-Cities.
Just because you live in the Tri-Cities doesn’t mean you don’t contribute to the economy.
Much of the money made may come from outsiders, but Cruz says much of the consistent revenue comes from current Tri-Citians. That’s why he encourages the community to go on bike rides or visit museums.
During the Apple Cup press conference, West Richland Mayor Brent Gerry said he hopes more events like the Apple Cup could lead to a West Richland hotel.
“One day we’re going to have a hotel here, so we’re going to have this hotel/motel tax, but I think these guys (Visit Tri-Cities) already have that in mind,” Mayor Gerry says, “and rightly so, because this such is an economical sprinkler throughout the region.”
Hector Cruz says the nicer weather will allow for more outdoor events, but he wants to have more conversations with the community about ways to improve the Tri-Cities.
He hopes people who come here for the Apple Cup will come back to see more of what the Tri-Cities has to offer.
