Marjorie Eastman didn’t want to wait for an invitation to this year’s US Senate primary. The self-proclaimed “party destroyer” said if elected she would bring a fresh perspective to the position both as a woman and as a veteran.
“There’s so much value in sending someone who comes from different walks of life, has a different perspective, and really just brings our core values back home,” Eastman said.
Eastman is one of 14 Republican candidates running for a seat in the North Carolina Senate. Based in Cary, she is an author, entrepreneur, and military wife. The national primaries will take place on May 17th. Registered voters in North Carolina can vote by mail, early in person, or on election day.
The three issues Eastman is most concerned about in the primary come from what she has heard from North Carolina residents. Security, the economy and education are all that’s at stake right now, according to Eastman, and she said they’re all intertwined.
Eastman has seen safety firsthand. After 9/11, she enlisted in the US Army Reserve. Her 10 years of military service included two combat deployments, one in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the other in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She said the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan inspired her to run.
“The decisions our politicians make affect not just us here at home, but every aspect of our lives across our country,” Eastman said. “I’m just getting to this point where we’re not going to get different results unless we send different people.”
Eastman said national security is linked to inflation, and college students should be aware of both issues when entering the job market.
“How much more they pay for everything affects them a lot more as an entry-level position in college than someone who’s more established in life and can absorb those price increases because they’ve built more wealth or savings,” Eastman said.
In terms of economic growth, Eastman also wants to empower small business owners and entrepreneurs, expand childcare and maternity leave opportunities, and create more clean energy jobs.
As a parent, restoring the quality of education is a personal concern for Eastman, and she also wants to improve the civics curriculum.
“We need to help our kids get moving again,” Eastman said. “Any nation that surpasses us will surpass our economy.”
Eastman is also a passionate advocate for term limits. She signed the US Term Limits Congressional Pledge in October 2021 and wants to send people to Washington DC who are “brave enough to fix the system”.
Eastman also wants voters to consider both perspective and the people they’re putting into office when they vote in May.
“We have so many people in our country, so many North Carolinians, who really just want someone to do the work and be a problem solver,” Eastman said. “I’m not going there to throw a fit on Twitter, or be some sort of social media star, I actually have depth, I’m serious, thoughtful, compassionate and determined and I want to get the work done and maybe a little politics make boring again.”
