Following last year's devastating wildfires, Maui is launching a powerful campaign called “Mākaukau Maui” aimed at revitalizing its economy. This initiative underlines a broader commitment to welcoming back visitors, supporting local businesses and restoring the island's vibrant community life.
Economic Impacts and Recovery Efforts
Before the wildfires, tourism was the lifeblood of Maui's economy. 70% of every dollar earned in Maui County comes either directly or indirectly from this sector, according to the Maui Economic Development Board. The contrast in the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate – which rose from 3% in January last year to 6.2% this January – underscores the urgency of a revival.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) believes the most effective way to support Maui now is to encourage travel to the island. This not only contributes to economic recovery, but also to job retention and community well-being.
Tourism Support for Maui's Recovery Action Plan
To ensure Maui's reopening is handled with respect and aloha, HTA has implemented the Supporting Tourism for Maui Recovery Action Plan. This comprehensive strategy, guided by directives from Governor Josh Green and other state agencies such as the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), focuses on sustainably rebuilding the community.
The Action Plan identifies seven key areas and initiatives requested by Maui residents as part of the Mākaukau Maui Campaign. These initiatives include recovery strategies and short-, medium- and long-term recommendations to coordinate government support functions for economic recovery.
