HATTSBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – This weekend’s champions on the gridiron in Hattiesburg are not the only winners.
According to VisitHattiesburg, the entire city of Hattiesburg is also a winner.
That organization says the state high school’s soccer championship games this weekend will draw an estimated 40,000 fans, which will have an estimated $4.5 million impact on Hub City’s economy.
Add that to the spring baseball tournaments at the University of Southern Mississippi, the Hattiesburg Half-Marathon and other sporting events this year, and according to VisitHattiesburg, 2022 was a stellar year for sports tourism in Hattiesburg.
“We were really trying to find ways to do a really good sales strategy, look for opportunities like this, and bring people here,” said Marlo Dorsey, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of VisitHattiesburg. “So we believe we can achieve more than $50 million in economic impact for the hub city and sports tourism in 2022 this year alone, and next year is looking great too.”
This is the third time in four years that Hattiesburg has hosted the state football championships.
