New York City Mayor Eric Adams unveiled one Green Economy Action Plan The goal is to place the city in a leadership position for sustainable innovation while addressing pressing environmental issues.
The plan, announced alongside Andrew Kimball, President and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and Abby Jo Sigal, Executive Director of NYCTalent, lays out a path to foster a robust green economy and envisions nearly 400,000 “by 2040.” “green” jobs in the city.
Central to the initiative is the creation of a groundbreaking Climate Innovation Hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal that will serve as a catalyst for advancing green technology startups and companies.
“Our Green Economy Action Plan will harness the growth of a new kind of industrial revolution and give New Yorkers the tools they need to build a resilient and prosperous city and thrive in our forward-looking economy,” Adams said .
The plan is not just about job creation; It aims to combat climate change by promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable practices.
“Addressing the climate change crisis with the urgency it deserves supports not only our infrastructure, but also our economy, with good 'green-collar' jobs for New Yorkers with diverse education and backgrounds,” New York City Deputy Mayor Meera said Joshi .
In terms of economic impact, the plan is designed to provide significant growth to the city's economy.
The Climate Innovation Hub alone is expected to have an economic impact of $2.6 billion and create 600 jobs over the course of a decade.
Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic and Workforce Development Maria Torres-Springer emphasized the plan's broader implications.
“The Green Economy Action Plan is an integrated talent and economic development strategy for the five boroughs and another example of the Adams Administration's work to connect New Yorkers to family-sustaining jobs and stimulate inclusive economic activity in high-growth sectors,” she said.
Funding for this initiative comes from various sources, including public and private investments, grants and government programs.
“There is no better place for innovation than the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal, located on the waterfront in the heart of Sunset Park, which is becoming a hub for clean technology innovation and manufacturing.” Kimball said.
The Green Economy Action Plan is intended to represent a significant step forward for NYC on its path to sustainability and economic prosperity.
“It puts us on the path to making New York City a leader in green jobs and the green economy of the future,” said Rep Jenifer Rajkumar said.
With its bold vision and strategic investments, the plan underscores the City's commitment to promoting environmental protection and inclusive economic growth for all residents.
