Official data showed on Wednesday that Japan’s economy contracted a larger-than-expected 0.5 percent in the three months to September.
The data released by the Cabinet Office was worse than market expectations of a 0.1 percent contraction in the world’s third-largest economy.
Private demand, including private residential and business investment, fell 0.6 percent.
Exports grew by just 0.5 percent, compared to 3.9 percent in the previous quarter. Imports rose by 1.0 percent.
The decline is more bad news for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose poll numbers have hit their lowest level since he took office two years ago.
