Hispanic voters concerned about economy and crime favor Democrats in PA election, poll results – NBC10 Philadelphia

What you should know

  • Polls conducted for NBC News and Telemundo in late September polled 1,000 Latino voters statewide and 650 Latino voters in Pennsylvania.
  • Voters nationally want the Democrats to retain control of Congress in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, but support for the political party has waned over the past decade, polls show.
  • In Pennsylvania, a majority of Latino voters said they would vote for the Democrats running in the open races for governor and US Senate, noting that economy/inflation and crime were overwhelmingly the largest problems are affecting their decisions.

Latino voters who responded to recent polls conducted for NBC News and Telemundo said they prefer Democrats both nationally and in Pennsylvania, although the results follow a trend that has emerged over the past decade of weaker support for suggesting the Democratic Party in the subgroup of voters.

“The 21-point Democratic advantage is lower compared to previous NBC News/Telemundo oversamples of Latino voters,” according to a release from NBC News and Telemundo. “In October 2020 the lead was 26 points, in November 2018 it was 34 points and in October 2016 it was 38 points.”

Meanwhile, 38% of respondents prefer Republicans to be in charge of the economy, compared to 34% for Democrats. On most other issues, however, Latino voters tend to side with policies enacted or proposed by Congressional Democrats and President Joe Biden.

In Pennsylvania, where two of the country’s biggest races are up for election on November 8, Latino voters across the state are backing Democrats Josh Shapiro and John Fetterman. Shapiro, the attorney general, and Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, are up against Republican Senator Doug Mastriano and Dr. Mehmed Oz.

Pennsylvania Latino voters surveyed indicated that economy/inflation and crime/drugs were their priorities when deciding to vote.
