GCR Live: Antitrust Law in the Digital Economy

Fenwick Antitrust and Competition Partners Steve Albertson will be speaking at GCR Live: Antitrust in the Digital Economy in San Francisco on May 17th. Steve will be on the panel “What Next for Merger Control in the Online Economy?” from 1:15-2:15 p.m. PT.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority became the first antitrust authority to block a takeover by one of the big tech four when it asked Facebook to roll back its already-closed acquisition of Giphy in November 2021. The Department of Justice has in outcry a calling for tougher, more dissuasive merger enforcement in tech markets while seeking to “undo” previous unchallenged deals. New tools, rules and processes are also being developed to make it easier for various authorities to review and challenge mergers. And yet, despite this wave of tougher rhetoric and enforcement, the European Commission has shown its willingness to take down Google/Fitbit and Facebook/Kustomer without structural remedies.
